The Hohensalzburg fortress: Salzburg’s landmark

The silhouette of the City of Mozart would not be imaginable without it- Hohensalzburg fortress which towers high above the city determines the appearance of the city.

The 900 year old Hohensalzburg fortress, the city’s landmark, is Europe’s largest and still the best kept facility. The fortress which was built during the Investiture Conflict in the year 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard served to protect the clergy and the population.

The Hohensalzburg fortress offers its visitors a magnificent view of the city of Salzburg. You can get to the fortress from Kapitelplatz through the fortress alley, from here the visitor can take the Festungsbahn which runs approx. every 10 minutes. On foot the climb takes about 1/2 hour.

The prince archbishop’s residence in Salzburg:

Prince archbishop Wolf Dietrich of Raitenau was a far-sighted man. He brought Italian baroque to the City of Mozart and developed Salzburg into a princely city. The residence from then on was to represent the spiritual and worldly monarch.

The state apartments also serve today, as in earlier years, as a representation of Salzburg. They are also used for state and festival receptions and similar top-class events. Concerts also have the ideal home here.

Even Mozart played regularly in these rooms. In the conference hall at the Salzburg Residence the violin concert KV 219 in A-Dur was first played in 20. 12. 1775.

Hohenwerfen fortress:

High above the Salzachtal, between Tennen and Hagen mountains, towers the 900 year old Hohenwerfen fortress.

Those of you who are hungry for adventure and keen on culture will really you’re your money’s worth at Hohenwerfen. The visitor can expect a variety of entertainment and things to do. From tours of the castle with weapons exhibitions, a stylish castle bar, a knight’s shop via the historic falconry with daily shows, the 1st Austrian falconry museum through to regularly changing special exhibitions.
Extensive supporting programme
During the summer months of July and August there are special evening programmes with an extensive range of supporting events.
access to the castle is via a shady footpath (approx. 15 min). For a surcharge the lift right at the top castle hall can be used.

Water games and Hellbrunn Castle:

Hellbrunn Castle and the world-renown water games are unique and in the almost 400 years since their establishment have barely changed. Have the same fun in the water games as the facility’s creator, the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus and his guests, did in 1615.

The water plays a pivotal role and ensures sufficient movement, by the guests and also the numerous original water machines. Guides take you into a magical world of fountains, sculptures, secret grottos and often incalculable water fountains. Playful details make your stay great and unusual at the same time.

Domgrabungs museum

Museum right below the Residenz and Domplatz. The remains of a Roman Villa are shown and the previous building of the cathedral from the 12th century.

Getreidegasse

The most famous shopping street in Salzburg. Taking a look in the windows is not juts recommended, you should also take a look upwards where you’ll see the fantastic shields.

Mönchsberg lift

In less than a minute using the lift you can get to the place where you can take the best photos of the cathedral and the fortress.

Mozart’s birthplace

The Mozart family lived here from 1747 to 1773. Inside there are still numerous of Mozart’s instruments and also models of the stage settings of his works.

Museum Carolino Augusteum

City museum with exhibits from the start of the Roman times to date.

Salzburg ship journey

A very modern boat takes you along the Altstadt and you can take photos from the river.

Mirabell Castle and the Castle gardens

In Mirabell there is reputedly the most beautiful wedding hall in Europe. The Castle garden is without a doubt very beautiful from which to take lovely photos of the fortress.

Toy museum - Museum in Bürgerspital

The museum has a collection of toys from the past 250 years in the rooms of the former hospital, around a very beautiful Renaissance courtyard.

Stiegl's Brewing world

The chance to see a brewery in detail from the inside.

St.-Peter catacombs

The catacombs are indeed not comparable to those in Italy, yet their location in the rock face has its charm. From the chinks and cracks you can see the old St. Peter cemetery.

Hellbrunn zoo

Hellbrunn zoo is right beside Hellbrunn Castle, which makes for an interesting atmosphere due to its position along a steep rock face.

Folk museum

In the so-called Month little castle near the Salzburg zoo in Hellbrunn there is a collection of folkloristic objects.
