Spectacle of nature

Hochgebirgsstauseen Kaprun dams

Here you can experience how water becomes clean, eternally renewable energy.
You can get to the Mooserboden-Stausee in an environmentally friendly manner in modern buses and the largest open inclined elevator in Europe. Inclined elevators are able t o cope with very heavy loads and extreme inclines. The Lärchwand inclined elevator surmounts the greatest incline, 81%. With regular tours of the concrete dam you can get to know about the "inner life of a concrete dam". What a dam has to be able to do, how is it monitored? You’ll be amazed by the virtual "electricity and ice adventure world" of Prof. H. Slupetzky.

Enjoy the fantastic view on the sun terrace at the mountain restaurant in Mooserboden or on a hike on the Glockner group of mountains and in the holiday region at Hohe Tauern National Park.

Hallein salt worlds

The mountain, the sovereign and his city of salt – discover an entertaining history:

The salt of the Dürrnberg in Hallein gave once gave the city and the state of Salzburg its name. the "white gold" was mined here by the Celts approximately 1000 years to 50 B.C. and was a treasured commercial product. Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, Archbishop of Salzburg, modernised the mine. In doing so he was not only able to dig for enormous amounts, but also create a cornucopia which gave the city of Salzburg its baroque imprint.

The enigmatic salt prince travelled in the salt worlds Salzburg/Bad Dürrnberg– through the salt mines. The clumsy Pater Jakobus was always his faithful companion, providing both amusing and also informative entertainment.

The guided tour contains:

  • rapid journeys on the Grubenbahn
  • 2 long miner slides with speed measurement
  • raft ride over the subterranean salt lake
  • access to the Celt village right on the Dürrnberg
  • and entry to the Celt museum in the city of Hallein

Krimmler water falls

These are the highest waterfalls in Europe with a fall height of 390 m are a symbol for all the natural beauties in the Hohe Trauern National Park. For over 100 years the waterfall path has been taking people who are enthusiastic about nature to see the natural spectacles with numerous viewpoints, bridges and turrets, up close.

World of the ice giants

The cave system created many millions of years ago by subterranean waterways and later by ice is unique in the world –giant halls alternate with narrow passages, from small ice curtains result mighty ice figures with gigantic proportions.

The snow water freezes drop-by-drop in Spring in the super cool cave area and stays frozen even during the hottest days of summer. Almost the entire guide component is covered in ice. The cave system stretches in total over more than 40 km!

Lighting as hundreds of years ago is by carbide lamps, which are distributed amongst the visitors. The guides illuminate the particular impressive ice figures with bright magnesium light. Particular attention has been placed on the natural conservation of this wonder of nature.

Lichtensteinklamm

The thunderous waterfalls and the rapid water masses have intersected the gorge over millennia. The rocks are now in points so narrow and so high that the sky can only be seen as a small strip.

Even in 1875 this spectacle of nature fascinated people so much that the gorge, was made accessible with bridges and pontoons using a donation from the Prince of Liechtenstein.

In the meantime around 7 million people from all over the world have visited the legendary Liechtensteinklamm.
There are hardly any visitors who are not fascinated by the mighty effect and the almost spooky light and shadows in the depths and narrows of the gorge.

Großglockner Hochalpenstrasse

The Großglockner, at 3798 metres altitude, is Austria’s largest mountain. Situated in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the Glockner dominates Austria’s mightiest mountain range, the Hohen Tauern and surmounts the longest and most well-proportioned glacier in the East Alps, the Pasterze.

Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, probably the most famous panoramic street in Europe, has made this fascinating Hochgebirg landscape accessible to a wide audience.

Wildlife and leisure park Ferleiten

The wildlife and leisure park in a wild romantic high valley has a view of probably the most beautiful Talabschluß in Austria. Ferleiten is situated at the start of the Käfer Valley and is the starting point for many beautiful hikes into the heart of the Hohe Tauern Nationalpark in the Salzburger Land.

Right at the Großglocknerstraße in front of the tollbooth there are more than 200 animals on approx 15 hectares. Walking time is approximately 1 hour. The paths are suitable for prams and wheelchairs. In the middle of the site there is a large pond with lots of places to sit and take a rest. There is also a look-out tower. Display boards tell you about the flora and fauna in the Alps.
The leisure park is appealing with games and fun over an area of 20000 m² in the middle of an impressive mountain world. You can have some food at our "Zwergenschenke" and "Büffelbar"! Parents can also keep an eye on their children from the inn’s terrace.

House of nature

Only a few metres walk away from the Getreidegasse is the House of Nature, one of the most popular natural art museums in Central Europe. Families will find the ideal prerequisites here for an exciting day out.

Our two houses have a world of wonder: one of the loveliest aquariums in Europe, a spectacular reptile zoo, the mammoths of the primeval world and breathtakingly beautiful exhibitions of the nature of our planet and life of people.
